A Typology for Knowledge: Architecture School + Arboretum + Bazaar

This project is an amalgamation of knowledge-driven typologies dedicated to cultivating and protecting archaic hand-craftsmanship as well as the natural environment. The project intersects three typologies as follows; the architecture school, arboretum, and bazaar. Arranged as a linear bar, the project links these unlikely typologies together to create a cohesive community where the act of sourcing materials, design, and making happens under the same roof.
Site Location: Cambridge, MA
Harvard Graduate School of Design (2019)
Fall Semester
Instructor: Eric LaPierre
Status: Academic Project

The project began by questioning the typology of the architecture school and what it means towards the training of emerging architects. By studying the different strategies of design studios, from the domestic scale at the Architectural Association, to the industrial and open plan of Harvard's GSD, this project also attempts to reconcile the unique spatial characteristics of an architectural studio. Creating an experimental architecture school that is collaborative with the public, through the shared workshops found on the second and third floors of the entire building. Connecting experienced craftsmen with young designers.
Though collaborative in nature, the strategy of the project ensures that the architecture school and bazaar maintain a fair level of autonomy from one another, as they are ‘buffered by the introduction of the arboretum, which acts as a new public space where the private users of the architectural school and the bazaar may meet the public.
