The Converter Island

This theoretical project is interested in the hypothetical ‘traffic’ of architectural form, influence, and pedagogy. It criticizes the bias towards Euro-centric architectural thought.

The project concludes with the design of an island, situated in the middle of the Atlantic ocean. Titled ‘The Converter’ the role of this island is to act as the traffic warden and institution that curates the flow of architectural knowledge and influence across continents. The Converter houses a series of professionals that are deemed to have a strong force of hand in architectural preservation and manifestation. The project is proposed as a theoretical curatorial device, in the hope of equalizing the European and American elements of the city and flatten the tension between the image of the replica and the replicated.

The final result of this project is a diagrammatic (not architectural) imagination of the ideal circulation of architectural knowledge. So that there may be less architectural copies, and encourages more vernacular renditions of contemporary architecture to emerge at a global scale.
